1- The Exorcist
With head spinning, ceiling crawling action and a ton of green goo, The Exorcist makes a number one pick among horror fans as one of the best horror movies. The original version was released in 1973 and has been haunting us ever since.
2- The Ring
Adapted from the Japanese movie Ringu, The Ring tells the story of a haunted video tape that kills seven days after it’s watched.
3- Night of the Living Dead
Released in 1968 as a black and white American independant horror film, the Night of the Living Dead is the zombie movie that has influenced so many zombie movies since.
This movie took fear and gave it an element of psychological horror. It begs the question, could you harm yourself to save yourself? Each sequel was released the Friday before Halloween for 6 years in a row.
5- The Shining
A Jack Nicholson classic movie of madness, The Shining includes the infamous chilling scene of two twins begging, “Come play with us.”
There are a ton of scary costumes inspired by this movie since Ghostface becomes the epitome of the serial killer in Scream. Scream not only has its own sequels, but also has the honor of multiple spoof films: Scary Movie.
7- Friday the 13th
It wouldn’t seem like Friday the 13th without this movie. Just be careful when you’re having fun at camp…and stay away from anyone hiding behind a hockey mask.
The 1978 slasher horror film with blood and gore, Halloween includes some of the most terrifying masks we’ve seen.
9- Paranormal Activity
In the same vein of The Exorcist, Paranormal Activity investigates the abnormal lives of those afflicted by demonic entities, only using in-home documentation to try and understand what is haunting the house.
10- House of 1000 Corpses
A Rob Zombie horror movie, this has gore and fear at every turn. And corpses, Dr. Satan and sadistic people you never want to meet.
11- The Blair Witch Project
One of the most popular movies in theaters, The Blair Witch Project stunned audiences. It was filmed in amateur style for effects, proving wildly successful and making shaky cam and point-of-view filming popular enough for it to be repeated in movies like Cloverfield.
12- Evil Dead
The Evil Dead is considered one of the classic horror movies that formed the genre. Everybody recognizes a good Ash scary costume around Halloween. Two words: Chainsaw hand.
13- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
With a name like “Chainsaw Massacre,” you get exactly what you want. Fear, gore, terror, and a thriller so epic it has remake after remake.
