World War Z, released June 21st, is based on Max Brooks’ World War Z novel of the same name. The story follows UN employee Gerry Lane on his race to cure the virus epidemic. World War Z is just the newest in the list of good zombie movies, but what is the best zombie movie? Here’s a zombie movies list that has a touch of humor, gore, and fear.
Top 10 Zombie Movies
1. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Night of the Living Dead is perhaps what started the zombie movie genre. George A. Romero’s shuffling, brain-craving zombies laid pathways for a whole generation of movie zombies to come and gives us the iconic zombie costumes we see so often.
2. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Romero’s sequel to Night of the Living Dead gave zombie horror movies its own place in pop culture. In fact, the genre became so popular that people across Europe began making their own zombie flicks. Dawn of the Dead is notably set in a shopping mall and shows the zombie apocalypse in greater scale.
3. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Perhaps the best of the funny zombie movies to date, Shaun of the Dead stars Simon Pegg (Star Trek) and Nick Frost (Paul) as two flatmates who only want to hole up in their favorite pub and wait for the zombie apocalypse to “blow over.”
4. Zombieland (2009)
One part humor and one part horror, Zombieland creates a family dynamic between four strangers on the road. There’s even a nod to Ghostbusters in the movie that will have your sides splitting from laughter.
5. REC (2007)
This Spanish film is one of the most unheard of zombie flicks, yet it has one of the highest ratings among critics. Later adapted into the American movie Quarantine, REC offers a first person point of view through a camera in a cinematic masterpiece that would later be compared to Cloverfield.
6. Warm Bodies (2013)
Part of the supernatural teen romance genre, Warm Bodies still has a charm to it all its own. With humorous scenes intermixed with moving scenes of a zombie trying to reclaim his lost humanity, Warm Bodies is a good watch for the whole family.
7. 28 Days Later (2002)
Special with its depiction of quick moving, intelligent zombies created through a “rage virus,” 28 Days Later has wonderful settings, actors, and music. The story examines everything from coma patients to military intervention as the entire country of England falls into ruins.
8. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
This remake by Zack Snyder of 300 and Man of Steel fame was the first step towards making zombie movies profitable. It was this remake that opened up Hollywood for future franchises.
9. The Walking Dead (2010-2013)
Okay, so this is technically cheating, but The Walking Dead is among the greatest zombie franchises to date. With whole episodes that that focus on character interaction, it begs the question whether desperate, manipulative humans are more dangerous than the zombie apocalypse.
10. World War Z (2013)
Is this the next big thing? Critics are acclaiming the Brad Pitt movie as a zombie movie unlike any other as Pitt’s character races to find a cure for the fast moving hordes of zombies attacking humanity. Not confined to one location like so many zombie survivors are, Pitt’s character travels around the world with the backing of the United Nations.
