Man of Steel, releasing June 14th, is the new Superman movie of epic proportions in 3D. With big names like Director Zack Snyder of 300 fame and Producer Christopher Nolan, best known for the Christian Bale Batman Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel depicts Superman’s origin story in a cinematically beautiful way while challenging a dateless classic.
Henry Cavill (Immortals, The Tudors) plays Superman, sporting a new Superman costume and the body to literally play a man made of steel. The latest Man of Steel trailer includes Clark Kent’s origins on Krypton, his relationship with Lois Lane, and his struggle against the Kryptonian General Zod:
Lois Lane – Another Sexy Redhead
Amy Adams (Enchanted, The Muppets) takes the role of reporter Lois Lane.
2013 Superman movie Lois Lane is a fearless overachiever who will do anything to get her story for the Daily Planet. She has appeared in comics and movies as both a brunette and redhead, though her personality has remained consistent. Lois is currently being played by Amy Adams, a redhead who seems to have Lois’ feisty temperament under wraps. From previews, she’s shown interviewing Superman for a big scoop after witnessing him do impossible things.
DC’s New 52 Superman
There’s been a lot of talk about Henry Cavill’s Superman costume in the Man of Steel. Like the DC New 52 reboot, Man of Steel’s Superman costume goes without the red briefs. While this has some fans up in arms, the design choice enhances the overall story line that his suit is a remnant of Krypton meant to resemble under armor.
Superman Then and Now
Originally, Clark’s suit was created from Earth materials and the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby, but this version of the costume will be a Kryptonian protective undergarment bearing his family’s symbol. This means that the S that has so long stood for Superman will become a “symbol of hope,” as Clark says in the trailer. It will be particularly interesting to see whether the changes enhance Clark’s origin story or completely retell it.
Cavill’s Superman costume takes the biggest jump in appearance yet when compared to previous movie incarnations. Even forgetting Brandon Routh’s Superman costume, which relies on a lot of classic elements, Cavill’s costume seems more organic and armor-like to contrast the new antagonist, General Zod.
General Zod, a fan favorite from his appearance in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), also appears in Man of Steel in a very Gears of War costume that bulks him up to near twice a human’s size. It seems that he will be playing the principal villain in Man of Steel, much like his work as an antagonist in his previous Superman movie appearances.
Thus far, there doesn’t seem to be too many major changes to Superman’s origin story. He is still a boy sent from Krypton at the planet’s destruction to come live on Earth. As of yet, theatrical previews have not made reference to Kryptonite, Superman’s only weakness, but with General Zod’s appearance, it’s hard to believe it won’t happen. If this movie is successful, there may even be a Justice League tie in, though Christian Bale doesn’t seem on board to bring his Batman to the franchise. So what do you think: Will Kryptonite play a big part in Man of Steel? Is DC building up for a Justice League movie to rival Marvel’s Avengers? Would you watch a Justice League movie with a brand new Batman if Christian Bale doesn’t?
