Halloween Parades in Mississippi

Halloween parades in Mississippi should be massive events like the mighty river the state shares its name with. Sadly, generations have missed the great works of Mark Twain and the adventures he told of along that river. Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, great Halloween characters in their day, have been replaced with Harry Potter and the vampires of Twilight and True Blood.

Did Harry Potter Wizard Away Mississippi Halloween Themes?

Harry Potter trumps Mark TwainThe state slogan “It Feels Like Coming Home” may have eluded to the memories most of the United States had for this state as they read the novels and short stories of Twain during their youth. Has Elvis, the son of Tupelo, Mississippi, been replaced by musical influences of Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga? Runaway slaves and riverboat captains and all the characters of the early American literature have been replaced by wizards and vampires. Halloween costumes do change with the times; adults who dressed as Superman and cowboys and Indians in their youth now watch their kids become zombies and other creatures of the night for their Halloween excursions. But that is part of the growth of independence for each generation. While the parents today wore their unique culturally appropriate Halloween costumes, so, too, did their parents with their popular choices like flapper costumes, which seem to be making a come back, possibly from the popularity of Boardwalk Empire.
