Flapper costumes are making a major comeback this year. Fueled by the popularity of the Leonardo DiCaprio movie, The Great Gatsby, expect to see females of all ages dancing in dresses from the era of affluence at this year’s Halloween parties.
The Rising Popularity of Flapper Costumes
Fashion runways have seen many noted designers using the era as inspiration for their dresses this year. This has carried over to planned costume selections for this year’s Halloween. Both men and women will be decked in 1920′s costumes, women in the popular flapper dresses, men wearing formal attire and fedoras. Zoot suits, those pin-striped suits worn in the era, are now popular with the swing dance set and will also make a comeback this Halloween.
The Roaring 20s was a time of short skirts, fast cars, and speakeasies to fight against prohibition. One of the first generations of pure fun, it’s no surprise that many modern costumes are reaching back to 1920s fashion.
The Great Gatsby Influence
There have been a number of Gatsby films, but the two latest both starred the popular leading men of their times. DiCaprio’s counterpart for the 1974 version was Robert Redford. While there may be fond memories among the parents of the children trick-or-treating, the DiCaprio generation will be the ones in flapper costumes out in force this year. More adults partying than going door-to-door with children may explain the high interest in the flapper costumes.
If you have not selected your costume for Halloween this year, perhaps one of the 1920′s wardrobe choices here at MrCostumes could make you a trend setter. Don’t forget to add feather boas, pearl necklaces, and a flapper wig or hairband.
