By "Indian" you are probably referring to the Banjara Walking People. And "Gypsy" is used, but not by those who ARE Romani/Rroma. There are meanings behind what some of the attire that those of both the Romani AND the Native American culture wear. By just wearing these things and going "yay i'm a 'gypsy' or 'indian'!!!" it's both cultural appropriation, and highly racist.

And for the gadje (non-Romani), the new york times would be a great reference, but if you do the proper research through OTHER veins, like those actually written and published by those of the Romani culture, then you'll read a different story.

As far as my research has gone, the term "gypsy" has been and still is used in conjuction with the Roma people (as seen in a NY Times article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/16/world/europe/16italy.html). A quick search on the term has revealed that many do indeed find the term offensive while others embrace the term in a historical context (see the discussion in comments here: http://myamericanmeltingpot.blogspot.com/2008/04/is-gypsy-racist-word.html). Allow me to say this: No offense was meant. Likewise, the costumes are not meant to be offensive in any way but instead based on a historical archetype that, in modern culture, is seen as energetic and vibrant, hence the term "playful." Gypsy costumes are as related to the Roma people as "Indian costumes" are to Native Americans: the costumes themselves have become what the surrounding culture perceives as opposed to what the costume culture actually is. Costuming is a way to embrace multi-culturalism, not a way to degrade any one people.

I'm sorry but you are perpetuating a racial slur and a stereotype that is FAR from the truth... and just as an FYI, that first group photo is NOT traditional ROMANI clothing, those are ATS BELLY DANCERS... its either Rroma or Romani... the words are NOT interchangeable with "gypsy". Just as "nigger", "beaner" and wetback are racial slurs, so is the word gypsy.

The Romani live lives of hardship and strife every single day, being denied work, education, and places to live because of their ethnicity and the sterotypes. It is NOT cool or "playful" to appropriate a culture and a RACE for playing dress up.

I realize that it may be a worthless cause trying to show you the error of your ways, but you really should do your research before writing about things you really dont know about.
